Why Anxiety Screening Matters
The things that we can do to make patients feel less anxious is better identify those that are at risk of anxiety. And that should really happen in the pre-assessment setting, so not on the day of surgery.
There's very good evidence that shows that if we address psychological concerns in the pre-operative period, then actually the physiological outcomes are better, i.e. the patients do better after the operation. So I do feel that this is an area where we're probably falling short a little bit.
