Pre Surgery Calming Techniques

Have you seen any techniques that have proved successful with patients that have helped them calm that stress, make them feel happier, more control going into surgery?

Well interestingly the adjuncts that are used in surgery to allay fears and concerns mainly focus around children and that's obviously quite understandable but so a child will come down to the operating room with a play specialist, they'll have an iPad, easily distractible so that we can anaesthetise them in the calmest way possible.

That's obviously completely understandable that's been focused on our paediatric patients but all of that funding and all of that research and energy is just put into that one cohort of patients so actually what we offer as anaesthetists generally other than a conversation in the morning and a small amount of time to identify any concerns we can't offer much more than that on the day.
