Pre Surgery Support
Preparing for surgery can feel daunting, but there are steps you can take to feel more in control. First, get informed. Ask your surgeon to explain the procedure in simple terms. Knowing what to expect can reduce anxiety. Connect with your support network. Talk to friends, family or your medical team about your concerns.
Sharing your feelings can be a great relief. It's not embarrassing to share. Say something like, "I'm not exactly looking forward to this. How were you feeling before you had a procedure?" So many of us have been there. 45% of people feel anxious enough for their surgeon to note it down. Talk it through. I cannot tell you how much this will help.
Practice relaxation techniques. Deep breathing, meditation or listening to calming music can help you stay calm. Check out our section on breathing exercises for detailed guidance. This might sound silly, but visualise a positive outcome. Imagine yourself recovering well and feeling better. This can shift your mindset from fear to hope.
Lastly, focus on looking after yourself as soon as you know you are having surgery. I want you to specifically focus on the month before. Eat well, stay hydrated (that's about 3 litres a day) and get plenty of rest. Keeping your body healthy helps your mind stay strong. Our sectional affirmations can also provide you with positive thoughts to boost your confidence.
By taking these steps, you will be better prepared mentally and physically for your surgery.
