If you're worried about having surgery, the loss of control, the fear of anaesthesia, then we've got a course for you. I'll tell you what to expect and how to prepare properly. It might be that you're someone who really doesn't experience anxiety day to day and surgical anxiety is new to you. What many people don't realise is that anaesthesia is very safe. In fact, it's more dangerous to get the bus on the way to the hospital than it is actually to have a general anaesthetic for most people. And we can put you in the best shape for it.
You could be completely healthy coming into this and you're just worried something might go wrong. Some hospitals suggest that around 5% of operations are cancelled due to patient choice. And one of the main reasons is anxiety about the procedure itself. There are techniques we can teach you to stay calm about the operation, not just on the day itself, but also in the lead up when you have some time on your own and you're thinking about it. Some of the things we might do to help you is teaching you how to slow down your body's response to anxiety.
Start to get control of your breathing, bring your heart rate down. Perhaps we'd look at your thinking, what your thoughts are telling you and stop your mind jumping to the worst case scenarios. It might be that you're even putting off having the procedure itself because you're so nervous. But that is exactly what we're here for. And we are completely confident that after taking part in this course, you will feel better.
