How to Handle Common Surgery Fears

What kind of numbers of your patients, Tom, when they come to see you on the day of their surgery, tell you that they are extremely worried or anxious about what's about to happen?

I do this sort of day in day out, but the number of concerned patients I see is almost, it's an easier question for me to answer, how many patients do you see that aren't concerned?

Oh, really?

They're all worried. I've had an anaesthetic myself reasonably recently, and I remember being, it was a very anxiety-inducing process. And actually, I remember being asked to get into the bed before being wheeled to theatre, and I said, "Oh, I'll walk." They were like, "No, no, lie in the bed."

And I remember the lights flashing as I was going towards the operating room, which was actually very, very intimidating. Then I didn't remember anything, I just woke up. And it was all fine, but it was interesting to see it from the other side.
