Managing Surgery Anxiety

Navigating Surgical Anxiety: How Operation Sidekick Provides the Support You Need

Facing surgery can be a daunting experience for anyone, especially when the fear of the unknown looms large. Whether it’s the thought of general anaesthesia or the unfamiliar environment of an operating room, many people are gripped by anxiety when confronted with a procedure. This fear, though common, can have serious consequences when it prevents individuals from getting the medical care they need.

Rick, the founder of Operation Sidekick, knows this better than most. His father was told he needed heart valve replacement surgery—a fairly routine procedure. But like many, Rick's father was terrified of the idea of going under general anaesthesia. The fear became so overwhelming that he postponed the surgery, despite knowing it was critical for his health. As time passed, his heart weakened further, and sadly, it was too late when he finally agreed to the operation. Rick’s father passed away before getting the care that could have saved his life.

This devastating loss sparked the idea behind Operation Sidekick. Rick realised that his father’s fear of surgery wasn’t unique. In fact, many people struggle with the same feelings of anxiety, whether it’s over general anaesthesia or the thought of being vulnerable on an operating table. The reluctance to move forward with necessary medical procedures often leads to further health complications—some of which could be avoided with timely intervention.

Operation Sidekick was founded to help people facing these very challenges. We offer a supportive, non-judgemental environment where individuals can discuss their fears, get accurate information, and receive emotional support. Our goal is to empower people to make informed decisions about their health without allowing fear to dictate their actions.
